Sandy Hackett has a new Rat Pack show at the Sahara. He has been doing Rat Pack shows for many years here and on the road. Sandy worked at the Sahara as a kid at the pool and in the kitchen. His dad was buds with the Rat Pack, so he knew them and their antics quite well. He knew Joey Bishop as Uncle Joey. In fact, Joey called Sandy many years ago and begged Sandy to portray him, effectively passing the torch. And I think Sandy nailed it.
This show at the Sahara is all new. It's playing in the Congo Room which is around past the NASCAR Cafe, up the escalators and past the buffet. Shows are at 7pm nightly and run a full 90 minutes. Being a brand new show, this is all subject to change.
Initially, this show starts off a tad weak. The guys that play the parts aren't the most convincing looks and sounds of Sammy, Dean, Frank, or Joey. OTOH, they "play" the parts very well. And they are backed by a nice band.
They do some numbers together, then do some solo numbers and duos, and get back together. The actors play off of each other very well. And there is a ton of comedy, especially from Joey Bishop. He keeps the crowd in stitches.
If all they did was stand there and sing the songs, the show would be a flop just because ther are better Rat Pack imitators in town. But these guys have acting talents too. The longer the show goes on, the more you appreciate Sandy sharing some of his visions of what he saw and heard over the years. Add in the comedy of Joey, and that completes the entertainment aspect of the show making it a well rounded must see show.
Behing the scenes, the old Plaza lawsuit and other court matters involving the name and use linger. You can't tell it by watching the show.
