Las Vegas Rock & Roll Marathon Dec 6th 2009
Las Vegas Rock & Roll Marathon Dec 6th 2009
This years Las Vegas Rock & Roll Mararthon will be held on the Strip Sunday morning Dec 6th. There will be bands all along the 1/2 and full marathon route. They are expecting 25,000 particitipants in this years event. http://las-vegas.competitor.com

This year I will be among the 25,000 participants running the 1/2 marathon (13.1 miles). I started training for this event during the summer and I'm ready to go the distance. I have joined the ranks of the insane that get out of bed at 5:30am on Saturday mornings and go run 13 miles for practice. I know I'm nuts but I have amazed myself that I can now run 13 miles non-stop. Two years ago I couldn't run a couple hundred yards, but that was also 45 pounds ago.

That's a lot of non-Harley miles you have been traveling lately.

Yesterday morning I climbed out of bed at the crack of dawn and hit the road for another 12 mile run. There were these guys in white jackets following me. All I heard on my iPod was "they're coming to take me away ah-ha ah-ha". LOL!!!

Yep...If a 52 year old pig like me can get in shape anybody can do it. I was always "in shape" but my shape used to be "round". LOL!!!

Thanks for the compliment, now my head is swelling to the size that my waist used to be. LOL!!!

It's been two years of hard work but it's been worth it.

Mission Accomplished -- I finished the race, all 13.1 miles of it in 2:29:22. My goal was to do it under 2 ½ hours and I just made it. They ended up with 27,000 participants in this event; I believe it’s the largest crowd ever for a Las Vegas marathon.

If you want to know how my legs feel, you bet they are sore and tired. Will I do this stunt again??? YEP!!! Looks like I’m going to go to Phoenix in six weeks for another run at it.

WTG, Cajun! Hey, I do appreciate how your legs must feel, after all, I did a whole 1.5 mile walk yesterday<vbg> ... at a more reasonable ole lady pace, but I do sometimes jog a little just to loosen the joints. ROTLFMAO! I'm about to go walk the second half of Monday Night football - are you gonna run another half marathon tonight?

P.S. - still waiting on that e-mail<g>.

Ralph, Congrats!
Not being smart here, I'm guessing you didn't finish in the top 10? I have no idea how long these things take. I know I would have finished in 27000th place! Not even making a mile! LOL

Keep up the good work, and keep that sugar in check!

WTG Cajun. That event blocked my path to cross the strip at 4:30 in the morning. So I turned around and took the freeway south to 215. It was a parking lot! 4 lanes of traffic stopped to get off at Trop and Russell.

I'm glad the weather cooperated for you and the event in general. It seemed to be a huge success.

Lee...You guessed right out of the 17,827 half-marathon participants I finished 9768. You can view my results at this link http://results.active.com/pages/oneResult.jsp?pID=71129634&rsID=88303
And the blood sugars are doing great, I had another follow up with my doctor Friday before the race and my lab results came back with the best levels since I was diagnosed. I was glad because I needed to load up on carbs two days before the event, That gave me a little extra cushion to eat more of the carbs I have been avoiding, like pizza and sushi.

GT...it was in fact a cold one, thank goodness for body heat. Standing in a crowd of 27,000 had it's advantages. A lot of runners wore warm clothes over their running attire and during the first 2-3 miles of running they stripped those clothes off and just toss them on the road. Since I started at the very back of the pack I spent the first 3 miles of my run dodging clothes and slow pokes before I finally got in the clear to lock in my internal cruise control for the rest of the 10.1 miles I had to go. It was quite an interesting event, I'm looking forward to doing it again next year. BTW...I'm going to go to Phoenix Jan 17th to run again in that Rock & Roll marathon series. Looks like I'll be training over the holidays...that'll keep the waistline from expanding.

JMT...It was a huge success, probably a little too huge. They already posted the entry fee for next years (2010) event and it was bumped up fifty bucks over this year. This year early registration fee was $85, I just checked the website and they set the starting fee at $135 for next year. In 2008 they only 12,000 participants, they more than doubled that this year with over 27,000.
