Thanks Cajun, Do you have a trip in the works?
About 15 years ago, I listened to a lady that worked in the fare setting department talk about the hows and whys of airfare changes. It was very interesting and has probably gotten much more complex since then. There are so many factors that go into a fare, and some change more frequently than others. Also, certain routes change those factors at different intervals than other routes.
I do have a trip planned, but it's a road trip to San Diego next month. I just happened to come across this article on airfares and thought that our out of town visitors could benefit from the info when they make their travel arrangements to Vegas.
I too had someone inside the the airlines spill the beans on costs. First I was in and around aviation over 15 years so I was not a virgin but this one was new to me. Booked a trip on line bla bla bla. For some reason I tried the exact same trip and found it was $300 less. Not a happy camper I called the air line and talked to a sweet heart who explained what was going on.
Some airlines -the one I used, allows one to set aside the price of the package for 24 hour hold. What happens if you do not confirm, those tickets go back into the pot. When I booked on line I got what I got but shortly after someone elses package went back into the pot at the price they had reserved.
Bottom line, unless the deal is great, don't be afraid to put on hold for 24 and keep trying. If that price is the best go for it otherwise book another trip and let those tickets go.
