It's not really over, but the writing is on the wall. A month ago, the Harmon was deemed to be unsafe if in an earthquake. The county gave them one month to come up with a plan to fix it or demolish it. A month later, MGM said they have a plan to implode it.
Back up a few years, The Harmon was planned to be the focal point of City Center. Crappy construction was everywhere, but the Harmon construction was really bad. Then the economy turned sour. MGM did not want the Harmon to be completed. Rather than patch it like they did the Vdara and Veer and possibly others, they just blamed Perini construction company.
There have been back and forth stabs between Perini and MGM ever since. Perini says they can fix it, MGM says it can't be fixed. Perini says MGM doesn't want it fixed because they don't want 3000 more vacant rooms. MGM says it has deeper pockets than Perini.
MGM does have deep pockets and influence in county government. The implosion plan still needs to be approved and that might take several months. MGM will probably do a few favors and win any arguments. The honest thing to do would be to give Perini a chance to fix it. The cheapest option would be to destroy it. Money trumps honesty.
