What has happened to the 24-hour coffee shop that every casino worth the name once operated?
Long about 2-3am, after a long day of doing what people do in Vegas, I want something extra to eat. But nothing heavy. Bacon, eggs, and hash browns satisfy my hungry without interfering with sleep. This trip we stayed at Harrah's (possibly worth another post), so I wandered over to their cafe. It closed at 11 pm! The sign directed me to KGB burgers, where I could get about 27 different versions of a half-pound of beef. No thanks.
I headed south, to the Flamingo. Yep, the closed sign directed me to a couple pizza and snack shops. Well, Bally's was just across the street. Closed. Paris, just a shopping corridor away, said the same. At that point I was ready to take the monorail "home." Closed.
After my trek back, I realized there was a Denny's between Harrah's and the Venetian. Not my first choice, but . . . Believe it or not, Denny's was closed for routine maintenance until 5 am. If anyone still cares about this tale of woe, the Venetian's Grand Lux Cafe still serves breakfast at 4 am. Although, it offered a limited menu and was obvious that most patrons were off-shift employees. So, I gather that my choice in dining in the middle of the night is not shared by many others.
Maybe I should try the west side of the Strip.

First of all, you make a great point, where every good resort had a 24/7 coffee shop/diner, as well as a steakhouse and Italian joint. And the coffee shops have been fading away. I guess it doesn't look good on the financial balance sheets. Even the locals chain, Stations, got rid of their signature Grand Cafe coffee shops and tried various chains such as Denny's and Coco's to fill the void. I guess that didn't work as they have recently brought the Grand Cafe back.
To your experience, it's easy to follow your logic that surely, Flamingo, then Ballys, then Paris would have what you were looking for. After all that walking, I would have been ready for that half pounder at KGB. While their burgers are pretty good, I could rant on other things I dislike about the place.
Paris used to have a 24/7 coffee shop. I defer to your experience and will assume that has changed.
In hindsight, you were really close to Planet Hollywood that has Planet Dailies which would have met your needs. Sauger's suggestion is good. Your suggestion on the west side would have found that TI has a real 24/7 coffee shop. I don't think Mirage or Caesars does. As for me, a trip to Peppermill is high on my list for very late night dining on the strip.
And yes, a trip report including your Harrah's stay would be nice.
