I somehow ended up not working this Sunday and went to the Lingerie Bowl IX at the Orleans Arena. Tickets were available on all of the locals freebies lists, so I jumped on it. The game was at 1pm on Superbowl Sunday.
First off, I scored great seats 4 rows up between the goal line and midfield. I was low enough to be close and high enough to get depth perception all around. Some of the basic rules for newbies such as myself are that it is played on a 50 yard field, making the 25 yard line midfield. It is played in an arena where basketball and hockey are played. There is no out of bounds sidelines until you hit the wall and fall into the audience. The game is played in two 15 minute half game segments. After a touchdown, the scoring team either goes for a one point or two point conversion. I'm not completely sure, but I think they have a choice to spot the ball on the 1 for a one point, and on the 2 for a two point conversion. The game is incredibly fast paced where they don't have a huddle between every play. There are only 2 kicks in the entire game. The opening kickoff and the kickoff after half time. No punts.
About the game. I LOVE IT. It's so right, yet so wrong. As I mentioned, it is a fast paced game, so things are going on as fast as I could absorb it. And in this fast paced environment I found myself confused on what I was watching. Sometimes I was watching the final playoff game of the year between the two best teams, sometimes I was watching and learning lingerie football, sometimes I was watching the technical aspects of a football game, and much of the time I was watching nice women in nice outfits bouncing around. Every now and then it was a bra and panty fight. And I just kept kept switching from one view of the game to the other. Sure it's girls in lingerie but It's real tackle football and they are trying very hard to win. It wasn't disgusting like female wrestling and it wasn't creepy like the porn convention. It was just right, and wrong. It would even be good for a date.
In the technical aspect of the game, most running plays are forward handoffs to the fullback. There are pass plays and the QBs throw pretty well. The receivers can jump really well to catch the balls too. Tackles are serious and tough and slams into the side walls can be brutal.
In the end, The LA Temptation beat the Philadelphia Passion 28-6 in their 3rd consecutive bowl championship. Philly's star player Marirose Roach did not play…due a brain concussion? Another Philly girl was injured in a pile up into a wall. She had to be carried away off the field.
It was a pretty good game. I would like to see another game when the season kicks off next winter. There's only about 5 games per season, some are away games, so if you want to see your favorite team, there's not a lot of choices, so you need to be ready for it. Even if I don't get to see another game, I'm glad that I finally saw it. I enjoyed it so much, I didn't bother watching the Super Bowl.
