Valley of Fire or Red Rock Canyon
Valley of Fire or Red Rock Canyon
Hi,
We're heading out to Vegas this Friday. Would like to do one of these two.
Don't know anything about either one. How far are they from Vegas? We're interested in doing a half day trip. Which would fit our needs? Also, can anyone supply directions? Thanks.

Connie,

Red Rock is only about 30 minutes from Vegas. To get the best view you need to pay the $5.00 and take the scenic loop. There's several places to pull off and park. You'll see very red rocks on the side of a mountain. You can also watch or join people climbing. There's a picnic area also. You can ride horses at Bonnie Springs in the same area.

You can take I-15 South then west on Blue Diamond and follow the signs <or> West on Charleston from Vegas takes you right there. Go one way and come back the other.

Valley of Fire is about an hour from town. Take I15 towards St. George Utah. Exit is about 40 miles past Las Vegas Motor Speedway. I think VOF is worth the drive. Mouse Tank is a nice hike. You've got several options after VOF. You can continue thru the park and turn right on 169 which is a beautiful drive back to Vegas near Lake Meade. Another option is to turn left on 169, go to I-15, and continue NE about 45 minutes to Mesquite.

You're much closer to the mountains in VOF. FILL YOUR TANK before leaving Vegas. You get away from town and they aren't too bashful about gas prices.

In my opinion, Valley of Fire should be a full day trip so you can take time enjoy the scenery, visitor areas, etc.

Red Rock Canyon can easily be a half day trip, especially if the traffic on West Charleston is slow. I heard a rumor that as a result of the events of 9-11, they (BLM) was going to close the scenic loop off to cars and make you ride a tour bus. I haven't heard much lately about it although I suggest you do a little research before you commit. If you can drive your car and stop at various points for relaxation, photo ops, hikes, etc, it can make a very nice half day trip.
