I haven't stayed at the Trop since I started trying the $20 trick. I feel it's always worth a try. However, if that doesn't work, and you are assigned a Garden Room, it is usually only $10/night to upgrade to the Island Tower. Well worth it!

Definitely avoid the garden rooms. Go to the talkvegas home page and then to the hotel/casino listing and then to the Tropicana website. You can see the rooms. You may be able to upgrade to a mini/jr suite with a little luck.

Do not except a Garden room!
If your traveling under a promotional offer, that is probably what they will assign you. I have in the past had luck getting upgraded at the Tropicana. I've gotten a tower suite, without the $20 trick!

They have them in both towers. I used to stay there a lot. Asked for Island Tower when my wife was with me so she'd be close to the pool. I took the front tower when by myself.

I'm not sure if you are familiar with the Trop. Just a reminder that the Island Tower is long way from nowhere. It's the desired rooms if you have a car and don't valet, and still isn't a short walk. The Island rooms are newer but I think the Paradise rooms are recently remodeled. I thought the Island rooms were brighter and more modern. I thought the Paradise rooms had that old Vegas dark wood feeling, although I haven't seen the remodel job. Personally, I like the suites of the old Las Vegas because they were nice. Many newer suites are just adjoining rooms.

I'd call it a 50/50 toss up, leaning to the Paradise for the convenient location.
