I'm planning on going to Vegas from 25 May-6 June, my first trip in 12 years!

Since I'm Australian, I was wondering if that's Superbowl time or some other special U.S. event during those 2 weeks.

I've had a quick look at the convention listings and couldn't see any huge conventions for then.

Also, would hotel rates be a bit cheaper then because it's the beginning of Summer on 1 June?

You will be arriving on a holiday weekend (May 24-26) so the first couple of days might be expensive, but you should get better rates for the rest of your stay. I would suggest you use the links on our home page to visit hotel websites ...and sign guest books wherever you might be interested in a stay, and the hotels might send you some e-mail offers.

You are going to be amazed at the changes in the last 12 years!

May is a lovely time of year to visit Las Vegas. However it is a holiday weekend here in the States (Memoriel Day, Monday May 26). So as Daisy mentioned, the first 2 nights of your stay may be a little on the high side, as many Californians (large state next to Nevada) take advantage of the 3 day weekend and drive over to Las Vegas.
I normally visit Vegas during this time of year each year, so I know exactly what's going on. After Monday Afternoon, things thin out, as they head back home. From then on out, it's usually rather quiet. The one good thing about the larger crowds on the first weekend is, normally there is top entertainment for the weekend.
The only problem I see with your travel dates is you have a Saturday arrival planned. A great many Hotel/Casino's won't allow a Saturday arrival, and on a 3 day weekend it may get even tougher to secure a room for that Saturday.
My advice is to start looking now, and if something looks good to you, take it. As your travel time gets closer, and room space gets limited, that Saturday arrival, may become a problem.
12 years? WoW, I would love to know what you think of the place after your visit. So many things have changed. The city just never stands still.

Jenny, Welcome to Talkvegas. It is GREAT to have a someone from Australia. I would love to visit your country some day. As Lee said, find a room rate that sounds decent to you and book it as soon as possible. You can always cancel a room reservation without a penalty if something better should turn up. That way you have a room but you can keep looking to see if there are any deals that come up.

25 May is a Sunday, although I didn't realise it was Memorial Day weekend.

I was planning on staying at the Golden Nugget Sunday through Saturday night, then switch to Paris on the following Sunday and check out Friday morning.

Unfortunately my plane from LAX to Sydney doesn't depart until 22.40pm! So I'll be getting either late checkout or paying for the Friday night at Paris because I don't want to hang around Vegas all day without a hotel room in case I want to have a bit of a rest etc before I catch the Vegas to LAX plane in the afternoon.

You know what, upon checking my calender, the 25th is a Sunday.....sorry for the mistake.
I think you have planned well with your hotel choices.
The Nugget has a new resturant I really like, called ZAX. It's an inhouse resturant, meaning no designer chef, but the dishes are served well presented and delicious to eat! Service is pretty good also, however on my last visit, it was lacking in attentiveness.
With the exception of the Fremont Street Experiance, there hasn't been the wholesale changes like the strip has experianced.
We use a split trip also, you get the best of both worlds. If your a Hilton Honors member, sometimes a late check out can be aranged, however it's not a garrentee it will be available. If your plane leaves at 2200 hrs, that means you'll be off to the airport around 2000 hrs at the latest, so you might be able to work it out with them.

I don't know if we have that here, although we have a Hilton Hotel in Sydney.
